5 hot spots to surf in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is the destination on everyone's radar, with its jaw-dropping landscapes, stunning architecture and exotic wildlife, everything from jaguars to elephants. But there is another reason to visit this unassuming island off the south coast of India, when the expansive beaches and blue waves can be appreciated at their fullest: surfing.

  • Mirissa Bay

Just a bit south from Weligama is Mirissa Bay with its crescent shaped beach lined with palm trees and rocky reefs on the sides. There are both left and right handers in this bay and it is mostly for intermediate and advanced surfers (or more skilled beginners wanting to get better with reef breaks).

  • Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is on the east coast and the best season to be here is when it is too rainy in the south. The weather in Arugam Bay with dry skies while the rest of the island is battered by monsoon rains. It is best to visit Arugam Bay between April and September.

  • Hikkaduwa

On the southwest coast of the island, about 120 km south of Colombo (or just 20 km from Galle), is the famous party town of Hikkaduwa. Once just a surfing village, now it is popular with surfers and party goers alike, there is always something happening in Hikkaduwa.

  • Weligama

Literally translating to 'Sandy Village', Weligama was destined to be on list of where to surf in Sri Lanka. It is arguably the best place for beginner surfers in the country. This energetic town is a lot of fun to spend some time in while you surf to your heart's content. The main beach has its own surf break, while other little beaches along the bay provide their own waves, which you can pick according to your skill level. Conditions are best here between October and April and this part of Sri Lanka gets some 330 days of sunshine a year. All you will need is board shorts, a rash guard and lots of sun screen.

  • Unawatuna

Another popular surfing area is Unawatuna Bay, and in this case it is more like a family surfing vacation destination. Then night life is not as prominent as that in Hikkaduwa but the waves are a great nonetheless. The swell on the beach is not always good, but the locals know where the good swells are, so just ask.
