6 interesting attractions in Sapporo, Japan
Sapporo is the largest city in Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan. Known for its mountainous snowy climate, winter sports, local cuisine, and festivals, this modern city attracts millions of travelers every year. Below are some of the best sights and attractions in Sapporo you must explore.

  • Sapporo Beer Museum

This legendary Sapporo attraction is in the original Sapporo Beer brewery, a pretty, ivy-covered brick building. There is no need to sign up for the tour, there are plenty of English explanations throughout about Japan's oldest beer (the brewery was founded in 1876). At the end there is a tasting salon (beers ¥200 to ¥300) where you can compare Sapporo's signature Black Label with Sapporo Classic (found only in Hokkaidō) and Kaitakushi Pilsner, a re-creation of the original recipe.

  • Odori Park

Odori (literally “large street”) is located in the heart of Sapporo’s downtown, providing residents with a lush, green escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life. From east to west, the park spans about 1.5km and covers over 78,000 square meters.

There are special events and festivals held at the park throughout the year, most notably the Sapporo Snow Festival. It is possible to spend an entire day and night in this area, as many of the city’s nightlife areas and shopping districts are within walking distance of the park.

  • Shiroi Koibito Park

"Shiroi koibito" literally means "white lover," which is the name of a famous cookie produced in the Hokkaido area. This park, which is more of a theme park than another green park, was made by the head company that makes Shiroi Koibito.

You can only observe the chocolate-making process; there are no tours, but there are workshops where you can make your own cookies. Otherwise, there is a shop (of course where you can buy many things made from chocolate) and a restaurant. The building itself is also nice, and there are outdoor seating areas where you can enjoy the day if it is nice out.

  • Susukino

Susukino is where you leave the kids at the hotel and give your oldest a few bucks to babysit for a few hours. Susukino is Sapporo's entertainment and nightlife district, and unless you are having a ramen dinner somewhere along the Ramen Yokocho in this area, which only serves Sapporo ramen, and planning on heading back right away, the place can get pretty wild at night. The area is also historically Sapporo's red-light district, and some places still carry that business with them.

On the other hand, this is where you will find most of Sapporo's bars, restaurants, karaoke and pachinko. It is worth a visit, especially if you have never been to Japan before.

  • Mt. Moiwa

The skiers in your group will want to head to the Mount Moiwa Ski Resort on the eastern slope of this little mountain. Those in search of a more relaxing afternoon can get on the Mount Moiwa Ropeway, which will take you about 3/4ths of the way up the mountain. From there, visitors take a mini cable car to the peak, which features an observation deck and a restaurant with a gorgeous night view of Sapporo city.

  • Curb Market

    Curb MarketCurb Market

If there is one thing that Hokkaido is all about (besides snow and skiing), it is food. The produce, meat and seafood in Sapporo are always super fresh and taste exactly the way they're meant to taste, not the way they do anywhere else in Japan.

At the Curb Market, you will find seafood and locally grown produce at real prices, not ridiculously expensive like they are in Tokyo. If you cannot buy anything because you do not have a kitchen or just do not know how to cook it, no fear, the best thing about the market is that there are restaurants using all of this fresh, fresh food. You can have seafood donburi at cheap prices and it will taste like no seafood donburi you have had before or will ever have.
