Bokor Mountain, the mysterious paradise in Cambodia
After many years, Bokor Mountain still remains as one of the most attractive destinations around Kampot, Cambodia. The mountain is famous for its beautiful landscape and the Bokor Hill Station which was formerly a French colonial resort and also a place of royal summer vacation.

Bokor Hill is located 42 km from the provincial town. It was erected by French colonists in 1922 during the reign of King Sisowath as a resort location for affluent French colonists who needed a change of atmosphere. The Bokor Hill is 1,075 meters high, and promises good weather and magnificent views. Big trees casting shadows over the water and rocks shaped as animal figures hold particular interest for tourists. The mountain overlooks Kampot Town, Kep Beach, Preah Sihanouk Province and blue sea water.

Getting to the mountain from the town gives you a chance to enjoy the natural beauty along the way on a newly constructed road. As with many historic areas around Cambodia, Bokor Mountain and many of the old buildings on it have been restored rather than preserved, and rights to develop the land nearby have been sold to foreign business owners. However, the new road means that visiting Bokor is possible not only during the Water Festival, but year-round.

Bokor Mountain is about 37km from Kampot. A taxi will set you back around $40 and minivan tours can be had for $10 per person, but the easiest way to get there is by moto. To get there from Kampot town center, go across the New Bridge and go straight through the roundabout (second right-hand turn for those unfamiliar with roundabout orientation). It is a straight shot on National Road 3 until you reach the checkpoint and park entrance. On a moto, you’ll pay 2,000 riel per vehicle to enter. Make sure to keep the stub for the checkpoint at the top of the hill!

The mountain is known for its cloudy conditions. Sometimes, visibility is too limited because of rolling clouds. When you get higher, it’s cooler. To have the best trip, you should prepare a rain jacket and warm clothes.

  • Bokor Palace Hotel

There are several places you should visit when you are on Bokor Mountain

At the top of the mountain lies the Bokor Palace Hotel. It is also known as the old casino which was built in 1925 by French. Since the 1940s, it was abandoned and now attracts many tourists to explore this old building. Inside the building, you can walk through grand halls, winding stairs. Behind the old casino, there is a low wall offering you a spectacular view of plains, rice flats and the Gulf of Thailand.

  • Old Catholic Church

Closer to the old casino is the Old Catholic Church. The building is striking and although now mostly empty save some modern offerings, has a stillness that can be serene or creepy depending on the weather. Off to the left and behind the church is a path up a small hill; there are some large rocks to climb back here so be careful if knees, ankles or general mobility is an issue. At the top is the remains of the floor of a structure and fragments of old tiles, but on a clear day, the view down to the coast is beautiful. Bringing comfortable shoes will help you a lot in mobility.

  • Thansur Bokor Highland Resort

Another place you should visit is Thansur Bokor Highland Resort. It is a complex of modern buildings including a hotel, casino, café and restaurants. Stopping by the resort, you can see how large the complex is. And it might become one of the biggest resort complexes of South East Asia.

  • Lok Yeay Mao Monument

Lok Yeay Mao Monument is a large meditating Buddha that overlooks the coast. It will be one of the first attractions you get to as you ride up into Bokor National Park and is worth parking up and walking to the top for the view.

  • Wat Sampov Pram

Behind the new resort is Wat Sampov Pram, a small pagoda and temple that is covered in colorful lichens, with many Buddha statues around. It is definitely worth stopping by to check out and enjoy the amazing scenery. Before you go inside, please take your shoes off.

  • Popokvil Waterfall

Popokvil waterfall is also worth stopping by. Popokvil also means “swirling clouds”. The best time to visit the waterfall is the rainy season when it becomes really attractive. The two-tiered falls are made up by flat blocks of rock and the wide river.
