Go to city parks
Beijing gets a bad rap for its air quality, but it is home to some pretty lush spots of greenery. Spring is the perfect time to enjoy one of Beijing's many city parks, so unwind with a wander, meander or even saunter through these picturesque pockets.
See Beijing by bicycle
Spring is the perfect time for seeing Beijing's streets on two wheels. Now is the time to put it to the test by pedalling around the city. Try one of these Beijing bike routes out for size.
Celebrate traditional holidays of China’s ethnic minorities
Spring is when many of China’s ethnic minorities celebrate their traditional holidays. Some of the most popular among tourists are the Water Splashing Festival, celebrated by the Dai people of Xishuangbanna near the Vietnam border, the Sisters’ Meal Festival, also known as Asia’s oldest Valentine’s Day and the March Street Festival of the Bai people, observed in the ancient town of Dali.
Have an al fresco drink
The sun is here and that means it is officially time to up the drinking ante. After a day of boozing in your favourite city park, or hankering after one from the office all afternoon, head to one of Beijing's balmy outdoor bars.
Visit a temple or monastery
Spring is a time of rejuvenation. Get in touch with your spiritual side by paying a visit to one of China’s many monasteries and temples. Check out the legendary Shaolin Temple, hike to the Hanging Monastery, or find one of the amazing temples in your city.
Run through fields of yellow in Wuyuan
Wuyuan is a secluded rural county in the far Northeast of China’s Jiangxi province. Due to its remoteness, the area has yet to open up to extensive numbers of travelers, making it one of few worthwhile places in China not overrun by tourists. The area is dotted with many scenic spots, from rice paddies to caves and rivers. The ancient towns of Wuyuan are also open for visitors, though most charge an entrance fee. While beautiful year round, Wuyuan is particularly magnificent in the spring when the rapeseed are in bloom, creating an endless carpet of yellow.
Go hiking
This is the perfect time to reconsider that New Year’s resolution and get out of the house. Embrace nature while hiking on the magnificent Great Wall, or on one of the many gorgeous mountains around China.
