Phu Khao Thong
Phu Khao Thong is one of the most interesting places to visit in Bangkok for calm. Phu Khao Thong is a jungle oasis in the middle of Bangkok with waterfalls, birds chirping, Thai music quietly playing, flowering plants, frangipanis, and thick vines. The tranquility follows you to the top of the mountain, past rows of bells to ring for blessings and prayer. Once there you have beautiful views of the city, you will be surprised by how much greenery Bangkok can have, especially in the area around Phu Khao Thong and Banglampoo.
Hua Hin
Hua Hin is a beach destination, with pristine white sand beaches, lively bars, thriving markets, tasty street food, and sprawling upscale resorts. It is highly commercial, with the crowd from Bangkok landing in droves on the weekends, not to mention the growing number of expats who now call it home.
Being a bustling town with a wide choice of seafood, attractions and tours to choose from, it is an easy and comfortable drive from Bangkok for those who wish to do some beach-hopping.
Kanchanaburi
Located in the west of Bangkok at the confluence of three rivers, Kanchanaburi is a relatively quick escape from the hectic pace of Thailand’s capital. Kanchanaburi has the most World War 2 History you will find near Bangkok and in all of Thailand. Prisoners of War captured by the Japanese were forced into slave labor to build what is now known as the Death Railway. It consists of a number of sites including the Bridge Over the River Kwai, Hellfire Pass, and other sections of track.
The best starting place to visit these sites is Kanchanaburi, but also possible in a one-day trip from Bangkok.
Ayutthaya
One of the largest cities in the world, Ayutthaya remains from home of culture to beautiful architecture such as temples, monasteries and reliquaries. The best sites are in the Ayutthaya Historical Park, easily explored by bike. You can also get there via train (about an hour and a half) from Bangkok Main Railway Station or take a leisurely river boat.
Koh Kret
This is one of the closest islands near Bangkok, but it is not what you expect. Koh Kret is actually a man-made island in The Chao Praya River.
The island is inhabited by people of the Mon ethnicity, similar to those you will find in Sangkhlaburi. There is a traditional pottery village where you can buy some authentic handmade crafts for really cheap. After exploring the island be sure to drop into the local microbrewery for some of the best beers around Bangkok.
