Places to enjoy fall foliage in China
Traveling to China in fall offers beautiful experiences, with comfortable weather, fewer crowds than in summer, and gorgeous autumn foliage. The most glorious thing about being in China in the fall is that you'll find you can spend a great deal of time out of doors and be very comfortable.

If you're coming to China to see the fall foliage, the best thing you can do is head out of the big cities and into nature. Especially, places in Northern China where the climate is more temperate are arguably better, but you can find beautiful autumn colors in many places.
  • Along the Great Wall, Beijing

Just an hour to an hour and a half outside China's capital are many sections of the Great Wall, all of which are in the mountains surrounded on either side by trees. There are different sections to visit but the Badaling section is also home to the Badaling Forest Park where locals take a "red leaf tour" along the wall. This section of the wall is arguably the most popular so you won't be the only one out there, but the photos you'll get will be amazing. According to park officials, the best time for viewing is mid-October but the season goes from late September through early November.

China’s westernmost province, Xinjiang, is chock-full of natural beauty, but its many spectacular lakes take the cake. The crescent moon-shaped Kanas Lake, which lies in the Altai Mountains, is famous for its turquoise waters and mythical Kanas Lake Monster. Though picturesque year-round, Kanas Lake really shines in the autumn, as the surrounding trees burst into colors as vibrant as the milky blue of the lake itself.

  • Huangshan (Yellow Mountains)

The Yellow Mountains put on a fabulous show of colors each autumn. The best fall foliage is in the valleys and villages like Tachuan, as Huangshan's legendary pines are evergreen. Leaves show their rich and vibrant hues, with colors ranging from orange to brilliant red.

The autumn foliage season begins in October and lasts to early November. Except for the red leaves, there are many other highlights which are worth seeing, such as the sunrise, rocks, waterfalls, oddly-shaped pine trees and sea of clouds. The Yellow Mountains are renowned as the most beautiful mountains in China.

The Yellow Mountains are close to other tourist destinations like Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Nanjing. A visit to the mountains can be combined with tours of these cities.

Situated in the northern part of Sichuan Province, Jiuzhaigou Valley is a fairyland, crystal clear water is the soul of the place, while the thick forest surrounded, is the most decent mate guarding the water. Water and forest, give Jiuzhigou the most brilliant colors in autumn.

Varied lakes and ponds, differ in sizes and shapes, are displaying their dreamy beauty colored with light blue, bright green and even deep purple, golden yellow, etc. Waters are also reflecting the deep-dyed forests with their leaves that have turned into yellow and red. It is a scene like the saying goes - God knocked over the palette. The best time to appreciate the colorful Jiuzhigou Valley will be from late September to mid-November.

  • Tachuan Village

In the foothills of the Yellow Mountains lies the small village of Tachuan, sometimes called Tashang. Most of the year, the sleepy village is left alone. However, come fall, and tourists flock to the idyllic countryside town to experience some of the most impressive fall foliage in China. From late October to the end of November, the trees turn stunning shades of yellow, orange, and red, creating a photographic contrast with the whitewashed village houses.
