Climb little Adam’s Peak
While the 2,200 meter Adam’s Peak, in Central Sri Lanka, is one of the best-known sights in Sri Lanka and is one hell of a climb, Little Adam’s Peak in Ella is a much easier affair.
It is more of a hill than a mountain and only takes about 3 hours to walk up and back down, including some rest stops and time to take far for many photographs. The views at the top are gorgeous though, and it is a fun activity to do either early in the morning or just before sunset.
Swim at Diyaluma Falls
To visit the Diyaluma falls you will probably need the whole day, or at least if you are planning to visit it from the top. About an hour drive out of Ella is the foot of the 2nd highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. Once you have explored the foot, drive 30 minutes more to the top. Hike about 45 minutes and reach a waterfall with many natural pools on different levels.
Explore the town
Ella town itself is quite small and easy to walk around. You can also take tuk-tuk rides from A to B if you plan to go outside of town to do some hikes, visit waterfalls or visit tea factories, but for exploring the town itself walking is the best option.
You can also follow the railway tracks out of town for some fun photo opportunities. There is also the cute Art Cafe which is the perfect place to sip on tea and enjoy a good book.
Walk along the rails on the Nine Arch Bridge in Ella
This now world-famous bridge is located just outside of Ella Town and on the same way as Little Adam’s Peak. With a small 30 minute walk through the woods, you will reach a piece of beautiful architecture hidden between lush green tea fields. This is one of the things you must do in Sri Lanka.
Climb Ella Rock
If you do not feel up to the 3 to 4 hour climb up Little Adam’s Peak, Ella Rock is an easy alternative and still has sweeping views of the area from the top. The walk, both ways, takes two hours, and it is a great spot to spend sunrise or sunset. The walk brings you along the railway line, past small stations and temples then up a big hill.
If you start in the centre of town, the trek can take longer, and measures about 8km in total. There are leeches in the long grass that can suck your blood once they attach themselves to your skin.
Eat and lounge at the Cafe Chill
The best place to take a nice rest and eat a pretty good meal is the Cafe Chill on the main road. There are few places on the island with the kind of ambience that Cafe Chill has. During the day it is very relaxed as the name suggests and at night it gets busy with expats and locals having drinks and enjoying some good music.
