World-clas hot springs of Noboribetsu Onsen
Nine types of onsen (hot springs) are featured at Noboribetsu Onsen, a prominent hot springs area in Hokkaido where ten thousand tons of hot water are used each day.
There are many varieties of trees colored gold and crimson at Jigokudani, the source of Noboribetsu Onsen, and Oyunuma, a former crater. The area is filled with volcanic gases and vapors from the hot springs, creating a perfect backdrop for the colorful scenery.
Hiking in the woods - Daisetsuzan National Park
Located in the center of the Hokkaido region, Daisetsuzan National Park (Taisetsuzan) is a notable hiking spot, and a highly recommended place to go on a hike during the autumn to see earliest fall foliage in Japan. Walking through a natural setting, especially in Hokkaido’s unspoiled nature would seem to you very reinvigorating and interesting. You may attempt to climb some mountains here in Hokkaido.
Onneto Lake
Onneto is a freshwater lake situated within Akan National Park in eastern Hokkaido. The lake is often called “Five Coloured Lake” which changes colors itself depending on climates and seasons. Amazing contrast of the blue lake and colourful autumn leaves can be enjoyed from early to mid October. The lake has 4km walking trail which is a perfect for a autumn view hiking.
Jozankei
From the central area of Sapporo, it takes about an hour by bus to reach Jozankei, where visitors can enjoy the autumn leaves while strolling along a mountain stream. Futami Tsuribashi (suspension bridge) is a popular viewing spot that is completely surrounded by the foliage. Visitors can reach the mountain top using the ropeway, and enjoy the view from high above.
There are many hot springs for day-trippers in the area, so you can even enjoy the view while soaking in the water. There are also fun canoeing and horseback riding activities.
Mt. Asahi
Mt.Asahi or Asahidake is Hokkaido’s highest mountain. It’s located in a center of Hokkaido, Higashikawa town and it’s a part of Hokkaido’s biggest mountain range “Daisetsu-zan”. It’s usually the first spot in Japan to welcome autumn leaves in mid-September while other parts of Japan are still summer. The mountain has several hiking trails with spectacular view spots.
