Sigiriya is a natural rocky plateau in the Central Region of the island. The actual rock is a natural formation from the leftover magma of an extinct volcano, but the rock has been used for many things through the centuries. There was a palace at the top of the rock and there are fountains and gardens around the base. Huge lions’ feet were carved on the side of the rock to mark the entrance of the walkway to the palace. One of the walls is graced with protected fresco paintings and another wall was polished to such an extent that it used to mirror your reflection. Sigiriya is the most visited historical site in Sri Lanka, while also being the most amazing natural formation on the island.
