Cherry blossoms brighten Da Lat city

Have you ever dreamed about the romantic scenery of Japan, where you can walk back home on a street under pink flying cherry blossom petals? If yes, good news cause you don’t need to spend that much money on travelling. You can do that right in Da Lat, Vietnam.

When spring comes Da Lat City in the central highlands province of Lam Dong, the town is dyed a tender pink by thousands of blooming cherry trees. After the time of hibernation in winter has passed, the Mai Anh Dao (Prunus cerasoides) cherry blossoms brighten Da Lat city. Many streets in the city, as well as the grounds of numerous old buildings, illuminates with the pink colour of the flowers.

History
Cherry blossom, or Mai Anh Dao, is the symbol of Da Lat city. This flower loves the cool weather so it can only be found in places that have mild temperatures. Some sources claim that the cherry flower was imported from Japan back in the 1960s. Others say that this flower was found in a forest in Da Lat and planted in the area around Xuan Huong lake. Unlike Japan or Korea, cherry blossoms in Da Lat have the shape of plum trees and the five-petal of apricot flowers. This is why local people consider Da Lat cherry flowers as something really special and unique of the city.
Time to See
The most ideal time to see Da Lat cherry blossoms is between January and March. For those who love to capture the beauty of these flowers, the best time to take photo is in the early morning. Sunlight in Da Lat gives the best photo effect between 6 am to 9 am. For those who find it too difficult to wake up early, you can get the best light again between 3:30 pm to 5 pm. The soft sunlight of Da Lat not only clarifies the pink color of cherry blossoms but whitenings people’s skin also.
Place
Many people from neighboring cities and provinces travel to Da Lat just to enjoy the flowers. Girls don the most adorable dresses and walk in the middle of the street, rows of cherries blooming on either side, the pink petals falling to the ground after the slightest of winds.

The most public spaces which attract crowds to admire, smell and photograph the cherry blossom trees are Xuan Huong Lake and Tuyen Lam lake tourist site. In recent years, thousands of Mai Anh Dao trees have been relocated around Xuan Huong Lake and many other roads in the city, gradually creating a charming “Mai Anh Dao space”.

Cherry blossoms in streets like Tran Hung Dao, Hung Vuong and Nguyen Du and the outskirts of Da Lat city have also reach peak bloom at the same time.
Da Lat Cherry Blossom Festival
The Lam Dong Province’s People’s Committee has assigned the management board of Tuyen Lam Lake Tourism Site and concerned agencies to host the flower festival themed on cherry blossoms yearly to promote the beauty of the cherry blossom and give visitors a chance to relax and enjoy the beautiful view as well as attract more tourists to the flower city.

The flower park at the lake was planted in 2009 on 100ha, of which the State invested in 25ha of the flower area with trees that were five to six years old. Some 30ha at the site were developed by local tourist enterprises. The Tuyen Lam Lake now hosts more than 35,700 trees in total.
