Get mesmerised by the Sasbahu Temple
Located right inside the fort is this remarkable 11th century temple complex, with the larger temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu and the smaller one to Lord Shiva. These ornately carved twin temples in sandstone are an exquisite example of exceptional architectural beauty.
The detailing and craftsmanship of the edifice, pillars as well as the dome are sure to leave you spellbound. The four sculptures of Lords Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and goddess Saraswati at the entrance are the finest amongst many adorning the walls. Perched on a cliff, the temple also offers panoramic views of the city below.
Visit Gwalior Fort
The Gwalior Fort is one of the most impenetrable fortresses of India. Built on a long sandstone plateau, this architectural marvel is the most famous tourist attraction of the state. A must-see here is the evening Light and Sound Show.
Explore Jai Vilas Palace and Scindia Museum
The museum occupies some 35 rooms of the Scindias’ opulent Jai Vilas Palace, built by Maharaja Jayajirao in 1874 using prisoners from the fort. The convicts were rewarded with the 12-year job of weaving the hall carpet, one of the largest in Asia.
Supposedly, eight elephants were suspended from the ceiling of the durbar (royal court) hall to check it could cope with two 12.5m-high, 3.5-tonne chandeliers, said to be the largest pair in the world.
Visit Bada Market
