Globetrotting action series Mission: Impossible has taken in its fair share of international locations. Tom Cruise’s seemingly indestructible Ethan Hunt ventured to the Middle East for the fourth film in the franchise and performed one of his now trademark death-defying stunts by hanging off the side of the world’s tallest building. The Burj Khalifa became a popular travel destination after its starring role in the blockbuster.
The third movie in the rebooted Star Trek film franchise is a big departure from the previous instalments. Idris Elba joined the cast, playing the villain, and Simon Pegg took on writing duties as well as returning as fan-favourite Scottie. To create a vertical city of the future, producers picked Dubai with executive producer Jeffrey Chenov citing the ultra-modern style of the skyline he saw while working on Mission: Impossible as a major factor. The Yorktown Starbase location in the movie used real-life views along JLT Waterfront in the final production.
Martial arts legend Jackie Chan has travelled the world during his incredible career. For Kung Fu Yoga, a Chinese/Indian co-production, Chan convinced local authorities to shut down the busy streets in the centre of the city for an epic car chase. The famous aquarium at Atlantis, The Palm Hotel saw some frantic kung fu action with Downtown Dubai and Business Bay neighbourhoods also featuring in the film.
A rare case of a film being shot in Dubai that actually depicts life in the emirate city, Beneath a Sea of Lights is made by a local filmmaker and tells the story of an advertising billboard repairman (Oscar-nominee Barkhad Abdi) who wants to experience the products he sees everyday. Director Neel Kumar has been based in Dubai for several years, and used his advertising background to inform the direction of the film. Beneath a Sea of Lights will also delve into the lives of the large expatriate community that works in Dubai’s service industry.
